Lamma Island, Hong Kong -China

Hi All, we had a relaxing and special time on Lamma Island. We rode on a ferry from Kowloon over to Hong Kong Island and then took another ferry to Lamma Island. On the second ferry, we rode with over 200 15 year old students from Hong Kong! It was quite a hoot to watch them interact. We talked with one of them on the way over and we were amazed at how great her English was. She told us that they started studying English in kindergarten.
Lamma Island was a pretty special place with an interesting mix between Asian and European cultures. Anna and her dad did some rock climbing. They made it through a couple of caves and up the side of a pile of rocks to a fantastic view! The weather was gorgeous and we actually spent a relaxing day at the beach! Hong Kong was a place that I hadn't given much thought to prior to our visit. It's a huge city which reminded me somewhat of NYC. We took a tour of the city and had a spectacular afternoon at Victoria Peak which we reached by tram - it was an incredible view of the city to say the least.
Now we're back on the ship for two days of transit to Shanghai which we will reach in the morning. There are only about 160 of us on the ship right now which has been awesome! Most of the students and lifelong learners went overland and will meet the ship in Shanghai. The young kids ruled the ship yesterday which was so much fun for them! They had a dance party in the Student Union with strobe lights and disco, then a movie night with popcorn before bed. Today much of the same...! Last night we all had a formal sitdown dinner and got to choose our meal from a menu! The little things in life...!
Sadly, people are starting to talk about the end of the voyage approaching... Can't believe it will all be over in less than one month!
Thinking of you all, Traci

  1. As usual, wonderful expressive pictures. Declan is getting so tall! What fun for them movies, popcorn dancing and a sit down special dinner! You are so right. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all valued and apprecialed the small moments in life that give us pleasure.Interesting how you have minimized your life in material wants and needs and have expanded it widely in knowledge, understanding of other people and cultures and in your own strengths.
I feel for you how hard it must be to see it coming to a close. Enjoy your last weeks to the fullest as I know you will., and please know we we miss you and look forward to your return.
    Blessings on this Sunday morning.
    Love always,
    Grammie

  2. Hi guys,
Fun to see all your faces in those pics! I agree w/ Mom, Declan looks so grown up. Garrett took me out to dinner last night for my birthday. We thought we ordered a goat cheese appetizer, but it turned out to be just goat-no cheese! Garrett ate it anyway and we had a good laugh thinking of you goat lovers- ha-hope it wasn't eleanor or max! miss you, xo cath

  3. Hi Everyone, Great pictures - loved the ones of Declan & Laynne and Traci & Anna, the best. It sounds like you had a great time on Lamma Island and I'm glad you got to go to the beach (I'm so jealous that you are in the warm weather - it is getting cold here.) Lastly it's really great that the kids had the run of the ship. It must have been a lot of fun for them!!! Take Care, Lisa Pizza

  4. Hi Traci and Johnny - yes indeed Hong Kong is quite the place and similiar to NYC as far as the pace and density of people, but maybe even exceed it in price. I loved being on top of Victoria Peak and looking down over the harbor and city. Enjoy the last month and we look forward to seeing you at Christmas. we are staying local for Thanksgiving and then going to Vermont. Will Dec get a 2nd Mohawk for Christmas fashion?

  5. Hi JD & Traci, Just checked the blog. It's been a while. Great to see the photos and read about your experiences of late. You all look terrific! Say hi to everyone. I guess Lamma Island is the place to be. What fun you must be having. Dec appears pretty fit with the shirt off. Perhaps, a likeness to that sculptured Bruce Lee photo you posted. Look out single ladies of Wychmere. Take care, Michael
